Sue Prom

By Sue Prom, angler & BWCA outfitter, Boundary Waters Blog Lady

TOP 6 fishing tips for walleye:
- Fish in the BWCA! It’s the best place to be in the state
- Fish at night or early in the morning- walleye are nocturnal
- Fresh line 6-8lb test- walleye have sharp teeth
- Fish where the wind is pushing the baitfish- the walleye will be in feeding
- Live Bait if you can- minnows early spring, leeches in the early summer and crawlers in late summer.
- Don’t spend too long in one spot, if you’ve been there 30 minutes then switch spots, the walleye aren’t there.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Warzone?

Should U.S. Border Patrol agents be allowed to harass campers in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness? They have.

Imagine you’re three days into that wilderness trip you’ve been dreaming about all winter. Deep solitude. Over the ridge, a low-flying helicopter appears. Its sound hits you first, engine screaming, rotors thumping the air, their whop-whop-whop reverberating off mountain walls. As the chopper draws closer and begins circling, you stare eye-to-eye with a heavily armed, goggled and ear-muffled pilot.

Mining firm says land is a gold, copper juggernaut

“But questions remain on the potential pollution from mining on the edge of the Boundary Waters,” via Star Tribune.

The company that controls mining rights to 32,000 acres on the doorstep of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area said Tuesday that the land contains 19 percent more copper, gold and palladium than it previously estimated, making Minnesota home to one of the world’s largest deposits of precious metals.

“These are not minor mineral holdings,” said Bob McFarlin, vice president for government and public affairs for Twin Metals, a partner in the planned project, which released the results of the new geological analysis. “The state is sitting on an absolute economic juggernaut for generations to come.”

Should the regulation of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness change?

What do you think?

Incumbent Rep. Chip Cravaack (GOP) and former Rep. Rick Nolan (DFL) are in a heated contest to represent the 8th Congressional District. Cravaack accused Nolan of putting the interests of “Twin Cities environmentalists” before the economic needs of the Iron Range when he voted, in 1978, to support the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Act that established the BWCA largely as it is today.
