Mayor Ness challenges LPOE libertarian claims

Ness Presents State of the City

Duluth head shop The Last Place on Earth has revived a great deal of attention for selling synthetic drugs branded as bath salts. Mayor Don Ness has taken a public step to oppose the LPOE owner Jim Carlson’s use of libertarian philosophy to defend his store’s sale of bath salts. Ness posted a lengthy critique of Carlson on the community blog Perfect Duluth Day.

“Carlson hides behind a dubious technicality claiming that the poison he is selling at the Last Place on Earht is OK because the chemists keep playing Russian roulette with his customers by changing the chemical compounds on a regular basis.”

“A true libertarian wouldn’t hide behind technicalities of the law – they would take full, personal responsibility for their actions. Carlson has a business model in which he is making millions and externalizing costs onto the community.”
