Minn. hunting group opposes assault weapon ban, magazine limits

The group, Hunting Works for Minnesota, wrote a letter expressing their views to U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken.

“Some 90 businesses and individuals, ranging from hotels to hardware stores, from Ron Schara to hunting groups, have singed a letter opposing proposed federal gun control measures,” via Outdoors Now.

Paulsen keeps door open to statewide run

Who will run against Al Franken in 2014?

Contrary to reports, Republican Rep. Erik Paulsen insists he’s keeping the door open to running for senator or governor in Minnesota next year.

“Representative Paulsen is solely focused on representing the Third District, but has not ruled anything out related to 2014,” Paulsen campaign manager John-Paul Yates said in an email to POLITICO Wednesday.

Democratic Sens. face gun owners roused by talk of new laws

Facing re-election challenges, some prefer to keep their position undefined.

Senator Al Franken of Minnesota, one of the Senate’s most reliable liberals, has not said definitively whether he would vote for the ban, instead signaling only his support for “the principle” of one.

Minnesota delegation splits on Fiscal Cliff compromise

Reps. Peterson and Kline cross party lines on Fiscal Cliff vote.

A climactic showdown in the House on Tuesday night divided the Minnesota House delegation evenly, with centrist DFLer Collin Peterson joining Republicans Michele Bachmann, Chip Cravaack and Erik Paulsen in casting dissenting votes.

On the other side, Republican John Kline joined Democrats Keith Ellison, Betty McCollum and Tim Walz in voting yes on the bill, which was approved in a bipartisan 257 to 167 vote.

Sen. Franken proposes ban on stalking apps

“Stalking by smartphone. It’s a growing problem, and a Minnesota lawmaker wants to stop it.

“U.S. Senator Al Franken told the Judiciary Committee in Washington that GPS technology is being used for sinister means by companies that create phone apps to stalk people,” via (WCCO).

Klobuchar, Franken cheer potential filibuster reform

“Minnesota’s two senators, Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, both pitched plans to reform the filibuster before the 112th Congress started back in January 2011. Their efforts largely failed then, but both said they’re heartened by Reid’s openness to changing the rule now.

“‘I think now it’s pretty clear that you’ve got a majority of Democrats supporting a change,’ congressional scholar Norm Ornstein said. ‘They have to be careful that they do it right,’” via MinnPost.

Sen. Franken on Benghazi and Cairo Attacks

Protests continue in Egypt after clashes late last night in its capitol.

Over in Benghazi, after militants in Libya killed four U.S. diplomats, including the ambassador, Chris Stevens, locals are holding a demonstration apologizing to the U.S.

Back home, members of the Minnesota delegation mourn the loss of fellow Americans.

 

Sen. Al Franken says, "My heart goes out to his family and those of the other three diplomats."
