A 47-year-old Utica man was killed Saturday night when he was accidentally struck by shrapnel during a bachelor/bachelorette party near Arendahl west of Rushford.

The man was identified as Jeffrey Taylor, who was tending cattle with his two sons on the property when they were invited to the party at a home on the same property, said Fillmore County Sheriff Daryl Jensen.

Jensen declined to identify the shooter or whose party it was. It happened in the southwest corner of the township about four miles south of the unincorporated village of Arendahl.

"It was a terrible accident," Jensen said. "Wrong place, wrong time … It’s one of those tragedies, you keep shaking your head."

Taylor’s two sons saw him killed the day before Father’s Day, Jensen said. Taylor was standing behind someone shooting a high-powered rifle at an exploding Tannerite target when Taylor was hit; the target was 20 to 30 yards away.

Every year Randy Stender and his family spend Memorial Day weekend at Birch Lake Campground, a tradition that ties him to the wild, unspoiled lands here on the edge of the Iron Range where he grew up. There was a time, he says, when he and his wife would have moved back — if there had been a job like the one his father once had at Reserve Mining.

So when he heard that Birch Lake’s shoreline could become the site of one of the largest copper mines in the country, he immediately grasped the conflict gripping this charming tourist town and spreading across Minnesota.

“That’s the catch,” he said, opening his arms wide to the lake that shimmered in the morning light. “Because I kind of like it like this.”

The state’s only accelerant detection dog now calls Cloquet home. Wish, a lab and golden retriever mix, is the newest member of the Cloquet Area Fire District. She is an arson detection dog and is trained to sniff out accelerants. Jason Maki is her handler and the two just got back from training about a month ago."She’s trained on a gasoline," Maki said. "That’s the only ways she eats. She’s a food reward dog."Maki uses a solution that is 50 percent evaporated gas to train Wish. He places the gasoline in different spots and then Wish is ordered to find it. When she does, that’s when Maki gives her a hand full of dry food.

When the Minnesota House was debating whether to raise the state alcohol tax in April, Kurt Zellers, R-Maple Grove, criticized claims that the tax increase would amount to only seven cents a beer.

“That’s like promising a case of Summit to the party and showing up with that bathwater called Leinenkugel’s,” Zellers said, referring to the Summit brewery in St. Paul. “It’s not a fair deal at all. Good Minnesota beer for Wisconsin bathwater, no sir.”
