Man accused in fatal Little Falls shootings posts bail

“The man accused of killing two teenagers who broke into his Little Falls-area house on Thanksgiving Day posted bail Tuesday and was released from the Morrison County Jail.

“Byron David Smith, 64, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder for the shooting deaths of Haile Kifer and Nick Brady. The teen cousins were shot multiple times after breaking into Smith’s house in Belle Prairie Township. Smith posted bail a day after it was reduced by Morrison County District Court Judge Douglas Anderson from $2 million to $500,000 after a hearing in Little Falls. Jail records show that Smith was released Tuesday morning after posting $50,000 cash as conditional bail,” via St. Cloud Times.

“He’s presumed innocent by law,” Smith’s laywer Steve Meshbesher told MPR News. “The burden of proof is on the state. And they have to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. And I have every intention of defending my client.”

Meshbesher said his client turned over his passport in court.
