Lawmakers call for hearing into Minn. Orchestra finances

The fiscal stewardship of the Minnesota Orchestra is at the center of a case being made by union members for a better contract. Now some Minnesota lawmakers are wondering if the state was misled before granting millions to jazz up the orchestra’s performance space.

When the Minnesota Orchestra got $14 million in taxpayer funds to renovate its Minneapolis concert hall, they vouched for its financial stability at the time, citing “three balanced budgets in a row.” Now, some lawmakers want a hearing to investigate whether that was truthful.

End of world fears prompt Minot to cancel school

While today marks the end of the Mayan calendar, not the end of the world, some schools are taking extra security precautions and one North Dakota school district scrapped classes all together reports the Grand Forks Herald.

Minot Public Schools cancelled classes Friday because of growing rumors about the Mayan calendar’s supposed prediction that the world will end and concerns for student safety.
