Breaking your heart as each chord progresses

He’s only expected to live another few months, and Zach Sobiech, 17, is saying goodbye in this song he wrote.

“After being diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2009, he endured multiple surgeries and months of chemo therapy. However, the cancer still spread to his pelvis and lungs. There are no known effective treatments remaining.

“Instead of giving up all hope, the Lakeland, Minn. native has turned to music as a way to say goodbye to his friends and family, though his music and story will likely touch thousands of people’s lives as well,” via The Blaze.

Federal spending in Wisconsin dips 52%

“Some federal spending in Wisconsin is already falling off a fiscal cliff, with big defense contractors and their suppliers standing to lose billions of dollars in federal contracts in large part because the U.S. military is winding down the war in Afghanistan,” via Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

180 pigs die in Conger fire

“Jane Kruger said her husband Ron has been raising hogs for 45 years, 37 of which they have been married.

“He was in a nearby barn that houses 500 sows when the fire started, and he looked out the window and saw smoke.

“Jane said Ron attempted to open the side door and gate of the barn to let out the pigs and would have likely gone into the fiery barn to try and save pigs, if it weren’t for Conger firefighter Mike Fischer — who works for the Krugers — and who pulled Ron back out.

“‘He saved him,’ Jane said,” via Austin Daily Herald.

“The first week of crow harassment appears to have made a difference, as there are no longer huge congregations of the big, black birds in the city.

“‘I kind of go by the complaints,’ said Rochester Development Administrator Doug Knott, who is in charge of crow abatement projects.

“The complaints to his office have subsided, for now, although he received a couple of calls on Monday from people saying there were crows hanging out around overflowing garbage bins in the city. He urges residents to keep their garbage cans and bins closed up and secured,” via Post Bulletin.

Police: Rochester man shoots granddaughter, mistaking her for intruder

“A 16-year-old girl is in critical condition today after police say she was shot by her grandfather late Monday night.

“According to Rochester police, officers responded at 10:55 p.m. to a home in the 2400 block of East River Road Northeast, where they were met by a 61-year-old man and his wife.

“The man said the couple had been asleep when they heard a noise outside, the report says. The man grabbed his 9 mm handgun and told his wife to call the police as he went to investigate, according to Rochester Police Capt. Brian Winters.

“The homeowner saw a figure at the back door and fired at least two shots, one of which struck the 16-year-old girl in the upper torso, Winters said. Preliminary reports from medical staff indicate she’ll survive her injuries, he said,” via Post Bulletin.

Cooperation may be harder to find at state capitol

“There are many priorities for 2013, but working together may not be among them. The high level sit-down was outwardly cordial, but political strains are already beginning to show.

“Governor Mark Dayton complaining of a statewide GOP campaign linking him to tax-hike proposals he hasn’t said he’ll support.

‘I just hope we can dealwith the facts in this whole debate. You know, we can disagree on what we should do about them, but I hope we can agree on the facts,’ Dayton said,” via WCCO.
